Research published in January 2026 by the University of Stirling suggests that lowering deer densities below three per square kilometre may be required to restore Scotland’s mountain woodlands. Based on six years of monitoring planted dwarf birch at three sites, the study concludes that current deer numbers are incompatible with woodland recovery.
